Katharine Hepburn was one of the first actresses to give her roles spirit and verbal intelligence. Before her, women in films were silent pioneers. However, the fact that she came from a wealthy Connecticut family and had started her career on Broadway did not endear her to the Hollywood establishment. She was not a lady who left much to chance or the studios; her support came from the press and the public. This biography is Sheridan Morley's tribute to Katharine Hepburn. She married only once and had no children; the things she cared for most were Spencer Tracy, with whom she had a 30-year friendship, her privacy, and her career, perhaps in that order. The latter is in itself a testament to survival in an evanescent profession.
