'When Peter Welsh enlisted as a private in the 28th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in the late summer of 1862, he carried with him a dual allegiance. He had a fierce loyalty to the Union cause, which he defended eloquently to a skeptical wife in New York and father-in-law in Ireland. But Welsh was also an Irish Catholic immigrant . who felt that the Civil War held a special meaning for the sons and daughters of Erin. He believed a Union victory not only would preserve the great asylum of Ireland's oppressed, but would indirectly strike a blow at Ireland's oppressor, England.' Wounded at Spotsylvania 12 May 1864, he died in Washington D.C. 28 May, and is buried at Calvary Cemetery in Queen's county, N.Y. Nº de ref. del artículo: 021979
